What Is a Split Phase Inverter?
A split phase inverter generates two 120V lines with a 240V phase difference, allowing the system to power both standard household appliances and high-voltage equipment simultaneously.
120V loads:
lights, TVs, refrigerators, routers
240V loads:
well pumps, air conditioners, dryers, compressors
Run 120V and 240V Appliances at the Same Time
A split phase inverter can power refrigerators, microwaves, air conditioners, well pumps, dryers, and other household appliances from one system.

Expand Power with Parallel Inverter Capability
Multiple split phase inverters can work together to support larger loads, higher surge power, and whole-home energy storage systems.
Improved Load Balancing for Stable Home Power
Split phase systems distribute power across two 120V lines, helping reduce overload risk and improving efficiency for high-demand household circuits.

Split Phase Inverter FAQs
Is a Single-Phase Generator Compatible With a Split-Phase Inverter?
POWMR split-phase inverters require a true split-phase AC input with both L1 and L2 (and N) connected simultaneously. A single 110V input is not sufficient, as the inverter depends on a complete split-phase input (L1 and L2). Without both phases, the system cannot establish the required operating condition.
In normal operation, the inverter expects a proper split-phase configuration with L1 + L2 + N input, and provides a corresponding split-phase output of L1 + L2 + N (for example, in models such as the SunSmart 10KP series). A single-phase 110V generator only provides L (live) and N (neutral), which does not meet the inverter’s required input condition unless both L1 and L2 are properly supplied, so it may not be recognized correctly or may fail to start.
What is the difference between split phase and single phase inverter?
A single phase inverter provides one AC voltage output, commonly used for standard household appliances and small electrical loads.
A split-phase inverter provides both 120V and 240V output, allowing it to power both standard household devices and higher-power appliances such as air conditioners, well pumps, dryers, and workshop equipment. Split-phase systems are commonly used in North American residential applications.
Can a split phase inverter run a 240V well pump?
Yes. Split phase inverters are designed to support 240V appliances, including deep well pumps, water pumps, compressors, and other heavy-duty equipment. Choosing the correct inverter size ensures stable startup performance and reliable long-term operation.
Can I connect multiple split phase inverters in parallel?
Yes. Many split phase inverter systems support parallel connection, allowing users to expand power capacity for whole-home backup, off-grid solar systems, farms, workshops, and commercial applications. Parallel systems also improve flexibility for future energy expansion.
What batteries are compatible with split phase inverters?
Most split phase inverters support LiFePO4 lithium batteries, AGM batteries, gel batteries, and lead-acid batteries. Lithium batteries are the preferred option for solar energy storage because they provide longer lifespan, higher efficiency, and faster charging performance.
Can split phase inverters work without batteries?
Yes. Some hybrid split phase inverters can operate directly from solar panels or grid power without batteries. However, adding battery storage provides backup power during outages, improves energy independence, and increases overall system stability.
Is a split phase inverter suitable for RV systems?
Yes. Split phase inverters are suitable for RV solar systems, mobile homes, off-grid cabins, and camper applications that require reliable 120V and 240V output. They can power appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, microwaves, and battery charging systems.
Can split phase systems support air conditioners?
Yes. Split phase inverter systems are commonly used to power residential air conditioners, mini-split systems, and central HVAC equipment. Higher-power models and parallel inverter systems are recommended for larger homes and multiple AC units.
