What Is A Solar Inverter?

Renewable energy sources are the future. Not only do they save you a fortune (over time) when it comes to electricity bills, but they are also a major contributor to the fight against climate change. So, it is no surprise that in the last decade, the interest in solar systems for residential and commercial properties has skyrocketed. In this article, we are going to give you a brief introduction about solar systems and tell you what exactly a solar inverter is. Keep on reading to learn more.

The sum of its parts

With renewable energy being relatively new, there is not a lot that people actually know about it. Do you know how a solar system works? Do you know the parts that are required for a solar system to be functional? Don't worry; that is exactly what we are going to tell you here.

A solar system consists of the following parts:

  • Solar Panels are also known as photovoltaic panels or PV panels.
  • Solar Inverter
  • Housing for the solar system

Depending on the type of system that you want to have installed, parts may vary. Some solar systems might also include an electric meter or a battery. Also, the number of solar panels varies for different systems depending on the energy output that you require.

Solar Inverters – What are they?

In simple terms, a solar inverter is a device that converts the energy generated by solar panels into usable electricity. It goes without saying that a solar inverter is a vital part of any solar system. Without it, the energy generated by a solar panel will be useless. Well, you could use it to fry eggs, but without the aid of a solar inverter, it won't be able to power your home or office.

How do Solar Inverters work?

We are going to get a little technical now and tell you how solar inverters work. There are two forms of electricity, AC and DC. Our appliances are designed to work when powered by AC 120/240V. The current that is generated by solar panels is DC and has to be converted into AC for it to be usable. This is the job of the solar inverter.

Solar panels consist of semiconductor material. It can be gallium arsenide or it can be crystalline silicon.   When the sun illuminates a solar panel, its light is absorbed by the semiconductor layers, and the energy generated is sent to the PV cells. This energy causes electors to freely move between negative and positive layers within the solar panel generating DC. The direct current generated by the solar panel is then transferred to the solar inverter for conversion into AC.
